Safety is a top priority when planning a vacation. Grand Cayman is renowned for its pristine beaches, fine dining food scene, and idyllic weather. But can you enjoy what the island offers if you don’t feel safe?
I’ve spent my life vacationing in Grand Cayman and lived there from 2014-2019. I can tell you from my experience that if you’re dreaming of a tropical getaway where safety and serenity blend seamlessly, Grand Cayman should be at the top of your list.

Yes, the Cayman Islands are considered a very safe place to live, which translates into them being a safe place to visit.
Here’s why the Cayman Islands are a safe place to live:

WHAT KIND OF CRIME DOES GRAND CAYMAN EXPERIENCE?
Like many popular tourist destinations, Grand Cayman experiences some crime, but it is relatively low compared to other Caribbean islands.
The most common crimes are generally property-related and include:

In all my time visiting and living on Grand Cayman, I never experienced any kind of property damage, theft, or assault. A friend did have his bike stolen, which he left unlocked outside his front door.

The Cayman Islands generally have fewer murders each year. Recently, the number of homicides has typically ranged from 1 to 5 per, although this can vary.
While even a small number of homicides is concerning, the overall crime rate in the Cayman Islands is low, and violent crime, including murder, is rare compared to many other places in the Caribbean and globally. The local police force proactively addresses crime, and the community’s close-knit nature maintains a safe environment.
Please note that the homicides here are committed between locals and not towards tourists.

IS THERE TERRORISM IN THE CAYMAN ISLANDS?
No, the Cayman Islands have not experienced terrorism, and the threat of terrorism is considered very low. The islands do not have any known terrorist groups or activities, and there have been no significant incidents of terrorism. In collaboration with the United Kingdom, the local government takes security seriously and has measures in place to protect residents and visitors.
DOES GRAND CAYMAN HAVE RELIABLE MEDICAL FACILITIES?


Grand Cayman has good not outstanding medical facilities. In 2017 I needed to have my gallbladder removed at the hospital at Grand Cayman. I felt the surgeon and hospital staff were more than competent and very kind. There weren’t any complications with the surgery itself. The bad news came with a missed stone in my liver duct. The removal required an endoscopic procedure that wasn’t available on the island. I had to fly to Miami for the procedure.
In conclusion, the island does have hospitals, clinics, and some specialists but, if circumstances allow, most people with major issues fly to the United States for treatments.

Safety while traveling is often something that you don’t think about until you feel unsafe. As a tourist, especially aborad, you want to avoid traveling to countries where you’ll find yourself in unsafe situations.
Here is what you need to know about being safe as a tourist in Grand Cayman.
IS GRAND CAYMAN SAFE FOR CRUISE SHIP PASSENGERS?

The Cayman Islands receive nearly 2 million visitors each year, and cruise tourism accounts for 80-85%. The government is very motivated to keep them safe, which is why you will see police officers walking around the port.
The port is entirely safe to walk around and catch cabs and public buses. However, cruise ship passengers should still follow standard travel safety practices, such as being aware of their surroundings, securing personal belongings, and following any specific guidance provided by the cruise line or local authorities.
IS GRAND CAYMAN SAFE FOR HOTEL AND SHORT-TERM RENTAL GUESTS?

Grand Cayman is generally very safe for hotel and short-term rental guests. The island is known for its high standard of hospitality. In all my experiences at the island’s hotels, I have never seen a shady character lurking around a property, felt the staff were unsafe, or myself felt unsafe.
Here’s why I consider it safe for overnighters:

✅ Security Measures: Hotels and vacation rental properties often have good security measures in place, including on-site security personnel, secure room access, and surveillance cameras. Many hotels and condos have 24-hour guards on site.
Though I advise you to take precautions at night, as in any place, it is safe to go out and enjoy the food and nightlife, unlike on other islands.
IS CAYMAN SAFE FOR AMERICANS?
Yes, Grand Cayman is considered safe for American tourists. They represent the largest share of the island’s tourism market. We wouldn’t be going in droves if it was unsafe.
ARE THE CAYMAN ISLANDS SAFE FOR FAMILIES?
Yes, Grand Cayman is a safe destination for families due to a combination of low crime rates, strong community ties, and family-friendly amenities. I see just as many couples with kids vacationing as I do without. The waters on Seven Mile Beach are shallow and calm so it’s safe for kids to enjoy swimming. There are also plenty of fun kid friendly activities like the turtle farm, fountains at Camama bay, and Stingray City.

Yes, Grand Cayman is generally safe for solo female travelers. While living on the island or any times I have traveled solo, I have never felt unsafe.
Here are some tips for safe solo travel in Grand Cayman:
✅ Secure Your Belongings: Don’t take valuables to the beach and keep and eye on your beach bag & belongings. Keep your passport and other valuables locked in a safe in your room.

✅ Use Reliable Transportation: Opt for a reputable transportation options, such as licensed taxis. If you are renting a car, ensure it is securely parked and keep your vehicle locked.

Again, overall, the Cayman Islands are a safe destination with a low crime rate. There aren’t really any areas I would advise to keep clear of except local George Town bars in the evening and particularly on Friday nights. I would this area closes to the airport and industrial park area.

Yes, for the most part you can safely and easily navigate around Grand Cayman. Construction and rush hour traffic are your biggest hurdles. The island offers several reliable and convenient transportation options for both visitors and residents.

In most areas around town, besides the bypasses, vehicles are going 20-30 mph so the general traffic flow is slow. The local drivers are used to folks walking on the sidewalks or side of the road in places without them. They are vigilant of pedestrians and bicyclists.
IS IT SAFE TO WALK IN GRAND CAYMAN AT NIGHT?

The island can experience heavy rain, especially during the rainy season from May to November. Heavy rains can lead to localized flooding, which might affect roads and some areas. However, flooding is typically manageable and localized.

Hurricane Ivan was the last major hurricane to hit the Cayman Islands in 2004. A few years after that, my family and I were on a trip, and a hurricane was approaching. The airport chartered extra flights and the airlines employed a full staff to ensure everyone who wanted to leave the island could. That’s the benefit about a hurricane is, typically, there is enough advanced notice to change flights and depart the island.

6. Social Aspects: Over time you can run out of activities and things can become repetitive, especially if you don’t like water-based activities.

Sadly, yes. Grand Cayman’s high cost of living and travel expenses mostly stem from its reliance on imported goods, which drives up prices through shipping and import duties. Despite the costs, many visitors find the island’s natural beauty, safety, and quality of experience to be well worth the expense.
