A COMPLETE GUIDE TO RUM POINT GRAND CAYMAN (FROM AN EX-LOCAL)
Trying to figure out if you should visit or stay at Rum Point?
I’ve been visiting Rum Point since I was six years old, and I lived on the Island from 2014-2019. As I’ve seen Rum Point evolve from a beach bar with picnic tables into a proper beach club, it’s remained one of my favorite places on earth. It’s safe to say I know Rum Point.
In this blog post, we’ll explore what makes Rum Point a must-visit destination, from its stunning scenery, world-famous drinks, soft sand, and endless water activities. I’ll help you decide if this is an afternoon hangout or where you could spend an entire trip.
This is your complete guide to Rum Point in Grand Cayman.
RUM POINT VS RUM POINT CLUB
Rum Point and Rum Point Club are used interchangeably, but technically, they are two different things in one geographic area. Let’s dive in and talk about each one.
Here’s a breakdown of the differences between Rum Point and Rum Point Club:
WHAT IS RUM POINT?
Rum Point is one of my favorite places on Earth, let alone Grand Cayman. It’s a scenic, laid-back area in Grand Cayman’s Northside district. It offers a peaceful escape from the island’s bustling spots, with beautiful beaches, calm waters, and a serene environment. It provides some of the best opportunities for swimming, snorkeling, and enjoying nature on the island. It’s easy to see why this area is so popular among residents and visitors.
WHAT IS THE RUM POINT CLUB?
Rum Point Club is the beachfront area of Rum Point with a bar, restaurant, and dock. This area features beautiful white-sand beaches and clear, shallow waters. You can enjoy snorkeling, kayaking, jet skiing, and paddleboarding. If that’s not your pace, Rum Point’s calm waters are perfect for lounging and soaking up the sun.

Rum Point also offers a beachside bar and restaurant where you can sample local cuisine and refreshing cocktails. Over the years, it has evolved from a bungalow bar into a mini resort. I remember it before mansions surrounded it. Though it hurts my heart to see it so commercialized, it is still one of the most special places I have experienced.
Locals refer to Rum Point Club as Rum Point. If someone says they are going “out to Rum Point,” it means they are going to the Rum Point Club area.
WHERE ARE RUM POINT AND RUM POINT BEACH CLUB?
Rum Point is situated on the northern coast of Grand Cayman, in the peaceful Cayman Kai neighborhood of Northside. Known for its luxurious vacation homes and stunning beaches, Cayman Kai offers a tranquil atmosphere that attracts visitors seeking privacy and relaxation away from the island’s more crowded areas. This area is a perfect spot if you’re looking to unwind in a serene setting with easy access to water activities like kayaking, snorkeling, and paddleboarding.
WHAT IS RUM POINT KNOWN FOR?

If you ask me what Rum Point is most famous for, I would say:
✅ Having the softest sand on the island
✅ Their Mudslides & Rum Punch
✅ Sunday Fundays in the shallow waters just off the dock
✅ Some of the best snorkeling on the island
WHO OWNS RUM POINT?
In 2011, Rum Point was purchased from Adrien Briggs by Dart Enterprises. Dart Enterprises is part of the Dart Group, which is a significant player in real estate and tourism in the Cayman Islands. They acquired Rum Point and other properties as part of their broader regional investment strategy. Their vision explains the commercialization that’s happened over the recent years.

Island Sunday Funday: Sundays at Rum Point are a little crazy, especially if you expect to have a relaxing day at the beach. Dozens of boats gather in the shallow areas off the dock at Rum Point and party into the early evening.

It is a great time, and if this interests you, grab a few beers, head out, and you will make fast friends with the locals. If you want a quiet day or have young kids, you probably won’t enjoy a Sunday at Rum Point.
Red Sail Sports Schedule: If you’re interested in a Stingray City or snorkel adventure, check Red Sail Sport’s website. They don’t offer tours every day, and spots are limited, so you’ll also want to book in advance to ensure you’re on board the day you want.

CAN YOU SNORKEL OR DIVE AT RUM POINT?

Snorkeling: Rum Point is a popular spot for snorkeling. The calm, shallow waters are ideal for snorkeling right off the beach, especially near the coral reefs and marine life (area inside the red lines). You’ll spot colorful fish, sea turtles, and other aquatic creatures. To know exactly where to snorkel, visit Red Sail Sport’s hut. They also offer snorkeling tours and equipment rentals.
Diving: While Rum Point is not a primary diving location, it is close to several dive sites. Some of my favorite wall and drift dives have been off the island’s north side. You must arrange trips with local dive operators to scuba dive at these sites.
WHERE TO STAY AT RUM POINT GRAND CAYMAN
Rum Point has fewer lodging options than Seven Mile Beach but has fabulous ones. Whether you are looking for a cozy condo or a large house to host a big group, there is a perfect rental option for you.
Here is a list of three lodging options and a breakdown of the rental areas in Cayman Kai/Rum Point:
1. RUM POINT RESORT

This is a fantastic boutique resort, and it’s a 60-second walk from Rum Point’s beach. Full disclosure: I have never stayed here, but I did get a tour of a three-bedroom unit. They are upscale and fully furnished with stocked kitchens. They have snorkeling equipment and staff to assist with booking tours, making recommendations, and answering questions.
Prices will vary depending on rooms and time of year. Learn more here.
2. THE RETREAT (AT RUM POINT)

The Retreat is a quaint condo complex adjacent to Rum Point. It has a private beach with the same soft white sand and easy access to the best snorkeling spots. They also have a pool if you want a break from the saltwater. They offer 1 to 3-bedroom fully furnished units. These are going to be a more affordable option than Rum Point Resort.

3. VACATION RENTALS AROUND CAYMAN KAI

These are your Airbnb-type properties, and this area is filled with some of the most beautiful homes I’ve ever seen. Here is a list of the best vacation rental companies in Cayman Kai.
While it’s easy to navigate vacation rental sites, I’d like to give you a rundown of the area to help you better select a property. The homes in each area are beautiful, but I want to help you choose a fabulous property that offers what you want out of your vacation. Look at the map below, and I’ll break down the six rental areas.

1. Canal Side
These properties back up to a rocky canal or a murky party of North Sound. Most of the properties have small man-made beaches but the water will not be clear and in my opinion is not desirable to swim. It is in an ideal location for taking a paddle board or kayak to explore the mangroves.
2. North Sound Side
Still along the North Sound, these lots offer sandy beaches but not crystal-clear water. The sound is deep, with turtle grass on the bottom. It’s a great area to boat, kayak, or paddleboard but not swim or snorkel. Tarpon and nurse sharks frequent this area. It’s not dangerous, but in my opinion it’s not ideal for swimming.
3. David’s Cove
This a tie for the best area to rent in. This is where my grandparents had their home. If you zoom in, you can see there is a deeper area that runs about 15-20 feet offshore. This is where you need to operate your boat. The middle of the cove is very shallow, but it’s a fun place to kayak or paddle out to.
There is also excellent snorkeling around the area, with many lobster holes. The shore is sandy, deep enough to swim, and not worry about the turtle grass below. It’s an excellent area for morning, afternoon, or sunset walks. The views here are also 10/10.
4. Bioluminescent Bay
Bioluminescent Bay is serene and secluded, but some homes have retaining wall docks instead of a beach. The other con with Bioluminescent Bay is that it’s not an ideal swimming place. The bay is 5 to 6 feet deep and covered with turtle grass, a place for upside-down jellyfish to hide. Again, I’d rent somewhere else if you want to enjoy swimming in the ocean.
If you want to boat, this is easy to navigate. It’s also a great spot to start a kayak or paddleboard exploration. The bay is also known for the plankton that illuminates when disturbed at night.
5. Rum Point Side
This is the other area I’d recommend staying in. The beachesith soft white s are beautiful wand, the views are incredible, and the shallow, crystal-clear water is perfect for lounging all day. It’s also a great spot to launch a kayak or paddle board.
6. The North Reef Side
The views here are beautiful, and most properties will have a mix of sandy and iron shore beaches. The water here may be a bit more choppy which might make swimming, kayaking, or paddle boarding more challenging. But the water is crystal clear and the color is pristine.
Wherever you stay, you are sure to have a great time. Kaibo and Rum Point are a short-distance from any rental and there is plenty of exploring to do all over this area.

- Snorkel at Barefoot Beach: The proximity of the reef and cliffs hugging the shore make this an excellent and safe snorkeling spot. You’ll likely have the beach to yourself and the calm waters allow for easy access to the reef to spot amazing marine life.
- Queen Elizabeth II Botanical Park: Down the street from the Cystal Caves a beautiful and expansive botanical garden. Walk through pathways with lush tropical plants and indigenous wildlife like the endanger blue iguana. Tickets are around $25 USD for adults and $12.50 for children 3-12.

Overall, there is a range of activities and experiences, ranging from relaxing to adventurous. Whatever you’re in the mood for, this area has it.

RUM POINT RESTAURANTS
While visiting Rum Point, you are sure to work up an appetitive. Don’t worry, with two restaurants on-site, they’ve got you covered. Let’s talk about each one.

2. Solis: Solis is Rum Point’s signature restaurant. They are open for lunch and dinner Tuesday through Sunday. Their Caribbean and Mediterranean-inspired menu can be enjoyed inside or outside. If you are coming for dinner, I recommend making a reservation.
