STINGRAY CITY
Stingray City is Grand Cayman’s most popular attraction. It’s world-famous and the only experience of its kind. But what exactly is it, how did it get started, and what can you do there? These are great questions to jump into first.
Here are some essential facts to know so you can plan your trip to Stingray City:
WHERE CAN YOU SEE STINGRAYS IN GRAND CAYMAN?
Stingrays are not strangers around Grand Cayman. However, there are places that are the most popular and accessible to see the stingrays.
Here are five best spots to see stingrays around Grand Cayman:

1. Stingray City Sandbar: A shallow area where you can stand in waist-deep water and interact with friendly stingrays that gather here. This is the place to see stingrays.
2. Stingray City Stingray City (Deep): Not far from the Sandbar, this location offers deeper water experiences (about 12-15 feet deep). It’s ideal for those comfortable with snorkeling or diving and want a less crowded experience with stingrays.
3. Rum Point: Rum Point, located on Grand Cayman’s northern coast, is another spot to encounter stingrays. Outside of busy Sundays, I often see a pair of stingrays swimming together when anchored here.
FULL GUIDE: RUM POINT GRAND CAYMAN
4. Northside Wall Dive: On the wall north of Stingray City, you can observe stingrays with a full belly burying themselves in the sand to nap. This is more of an observation than an interactive experience.
5. Seven Mile Beach: Stingrays like smooth sandy bottoms, which is Seven Mile Beach. On a morning walk, I spotted three southern stingrays looking for food near the shoreline. These stingrays aren’t used to people and will scatter when approached, but you’ll see them.
Note: Each spot offers a unique experience, but Stingray City Sandbar remains the most popular destination for interacting with stingrays.
THE INFAMOUS STINGRAY CITY
Stingray City in Grand Cayman is a unique spot in the North Sound where you can interact with friendly wild stingrays in their natural environment.
This famous attraction has two main areas: the Sandbar, perfect for wading and feeding stingrays in shallow waters, and Stingray City Deep, a spot ideal for snorkeling or diving.

Stingray City Deep is about a mile away. There are fewer stingrays here, but it’s an ideal spot for scuba divers who want to hand-feed the rays.

99% of tourists go to the Stingray City Sandbar. Visitors stand in waist-deep water, creating a safe environment for dozens of stingrays to glide gracefully around them. Guided tours allow guests to feed, touch, and learn about these gentle creatures up close.
WHAT CAN YOU DO AT STINGRAY CITY?
At Stingray City, you can enjoy various memorable activities centered around interacting with the friendly stingrays.
Here are five of my favorite things to do at Stingray City:
#1 FEED THE STINGRAYS
At Stingray City Sandbar, you can wade in 2-5 feet of clear, shallow water and get up close with stingrays. This is perfect for those who like to stay above water. Tour guides bring squid to attract the rays, allowing you to feed and observe them up close.

#2 SNORKEL
At Stingray City (Deep), you can snorkel or dive in 12-15 feet of water for a unique view of stingrays and other marine life. Most tours provide snorkeling gear, but if you’re at the sandbar, it’s often best to engage directly with the stingrays rather than snorkeling since there isn’t much to see below.
Note: For snorkeling fans, consider a combo tour with stops at the Barrier Reef or Coral Gardens for a more varied underwater experience.
#3 TAKE PHOTOS & VIDEOS
Bring a waterproof camera or GoPro to capture your stingray encounters—the clear water and marine life make for stunning shots. Some tour guides, like Red Sail Sports, offer photo packages, but why pay when you can snap your own?
#4 LEARN ABOUT MARINE LIFE
Your tour guide often provides information about the stingrays, their behavior, and their role in the ecosystem. I find this educational aspect adds depth to the experience and helps me appreciate the marine environment.
#5 RELAX & ENJOY THE VIEW
One of my favorite parts of visiting Stingray City is the gorgeous Caribbean backdrop. The area is serene and picturesque, perfect for unwinding and soaking up some sun—especially with a refreshing rum punch in hand.
HOW DID STINGRAY CITY START?
Stingray City’s origins trace back to unplanned encounters between local fishermen and stingrays. In the 1950s and 1960s, fishermen anchored in the North Sound to escape mosquitoes and clean their catch, leaving scraps that attracted stingrays. Over time, the rays began associating boats with an easy food source and grew accustomed to people.
As tourism grew, locals saw the potential for sharing this unique experience. Stingray City evolved into a popular attraction where visitors can interact with rays in shallow waters at the Sandbar.
CAN KIDS GO TO STINGRAY CITY AND IS IT A GOOD ACTIVITY FOR FAMILIES?
Stingray City is an excellent family activity, especially for kids 10 and up. Here’s why:
- Family-Friendly Interaction: The gentle southern stingrays are safe and approachable for all ages. Kids can learn about marine life in a hands-on way with informative guides.
- Shallow Waters: The Sandbar’s shallow water (2 to 5 feet) makes it safe and easy for children to interact with the rays under parental supervision.
- Fun and Engagement: Feeding the rays and snorkeling offer engaging experiences for kids and teens, making it both educational and exciting.
- Guided Tours: Experienced guides ensure safety, providing life jackets and instructions for a smooth, enjoyable experience.
- Convenient Logistics: Boat tours make it easy to access the Sandbar, with the option for comfortable, guided transportation.
Note: If you’re visiting during peak times (Nov. – March), booking early ensures you get the tour of your choice.
GETTING TO STINGRAY CITY
Stingray City sounds like a pretty cool place, huh? Let’s talk about logistics next. Where is it and what are your options to get there.
Here’s what you need to know about getting to Stingray City:
WHERE IS STINGRAY CITY? HOW FAR OFFSHORE IS IT?
Stingray City is approximately 3 to 5 miles (5 to 8 kilometers) offshore from the northern coast of Grand Cayman in North Sound. The sandbar is nestled up against the reef, which run along the perimeter of most of the island.
Approximate Coordinates: 19.357° N latitude, 81.384° W longitude.
HOW TO GET TO STINGRAY CITY
Most visitors reach Stingray City by boat or jetski, with tours departing from popular spots like Seven Mile Beach, George Town, the Cayman Islands Yacht Club, and Rum Point. While it may seem tempting to paddleboard, kayak, or swim to the sandbar, it’s not recommended. The distance is far, and the waters can get choppy with waves reaching 3+ feet. Plus, there’s heavy boat traffic throughout the day, making it risky to venture out on your own.

HOW LONG IS THE BOAT RIDE TO STINGRAY CITY?
The boat ride to the Sandbar usually takes about 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the departure point and sea conditions.
CAN YOU GO TO STINGRAY CITY ON YOUR OWN?
You don’t need to join a guided tour to visit Stingray City, but you’ll need your boat or jet ski with a reliable anchor. It can get congested at peak times, so be prepared to maneuver around a small area with lots of other boats and swimmers.
One suggestion is anchoring in deeper water and swimming into the shallow area. It will be easier and less hectic than getting a prime spot.
CAN YOU SWIM TO STINGRAY CITY?
Swimming to Stingray City from the shore is possible but I do not recommend it. Here are four practical reasons why:
🛑 Offshore Distance: It’s 3-5 miles offshore. For most people, this distance is too far to swim safely.
🛑 Ocean Conditions: Strong currents, waves, and weather make swimming dangerous.
🛑 Marine Traffic: Boats and tour vessels frequent the area, increasing the risk of accidents.
🛑 Lack of Direct Access: There are no clear swimming paths, and you’ll encounter coral heads and marine life along the way.
For safety and practicality, please take a boat or jet ski to Stingray City.
THE STINGRAYS AT GRAND CAYMAN’S STINGRAY CITY

Get ready to meet Grand Cayman’s most famous resident. In this section, I’ll share everything you need to know about these gentle creatures and what to expect during your encounters—from their behaviors to the best ways to interact safely in shallow, turquoise waters.
Here’s what you need to know as you prepare to get close up with the friendly stingrays of Stingray City:
WHAT TYPES OF STINGRAYS ARE AT STINGRAY CITY?
There are approximately 220 species of stingrays. At Stingray City, you’ll mostly encounter the Southern Stingray, known for its gentle, curious nature and graceful gliding in the water. These stingrays are accustomed to human interaction, making them approachable and friendly.

They have a diamond-shaped, flat body and range in color from light gray to brown, with a wingspan of up to 5 feet for females and 3 to 4 feet for males. Females tend to be larger, weighing 150 pounds, while males are smaller at about 60-80 pounds.
IS IT SAFE TO SWIM WITH STINGRAYS?
Swimming with stingrays at Stingray City in Grand Cayman is generally safe. Southern stingrays are docile and accustomed to human interaction, responding calmly. I’ve visited multiple times and never witnessed an incident.

Here are a few simple guidelines for safe interaction:
✅ Respect the Rays: Approach gently and avoid sudden movements.
✅ Touch Safely: Gently touch their back or sides; avoid the sensitive underside.
✅ Stay Calm: Avoid splashing or loud noises that may disturb them.
✅ Shuffle Your Feet: No need for shoes—shuffle your feet to avoid stepping on a ray.
As long as you follow these tips, stingrays are unlikely to sting. They use their barbs as a defense mechanism, not as an attack. Listen to your tour guide’s safety briefing for extra peace of mind. And if you’re uncomfortable, it’s perfectly fine to observe from the boat.
ARE THE STINGRAYS SCARY?
Some people are nervous around the stingrays, but they are not dangerous. These stingrays are around people all day, every day. They are calm and only show aggression when provoked.
Many people must ease their way into this experience, and that’s okay. Take your time to feel comfortable, and your guide will help. Trust your instincts, and don’t let anyone push you beyond your comfort zone.
If you are one of the unafraid ones, expect those who are to seek refuge on your back or shoulders.

HAS ANYONE BEEN STUNG AT STINGRAY CITY?
Stingray City is very safe. Stingrays are used to human interaction and generally non-aggressive. While rare, stinging incidents can occur when visitors accidentally step on or disturb the rays. Most injuries happen due to accidental contact or being grazed by a barb, mainly when the rays feed and congregate around the boat. It’s important to note that any contact is not aggressive behavior from the stingrays.

Let’s talk about Steve Irwin. The stingray that killed him was a different species, and the barb pierced his heart, which caused him to bleed to death. His death was a rare case, and all stingrays shouldn’t be considered dangerous because of this incident. As a reminder, incidents are incredibly uncommon, given the millions of visitors over the years.
WHAT DO YOU FEED THE STINGRAYS?
At Stingray City, they’re mostly fed squid, which you can offer by laying your hand flat and allowing them to suck it up with their suction-like mouths. Don’t worry if they grab your fingers – it’s harmless, and you’ll just feel some little teeth, but nothing serious.

Note that most tour operators at Stingray City may only allow you to briefly hold the stingrays rather than feed them. However, if you charter a private boat or go alone, you can feed them. You can buy boxed squid from local grocery stores like Foster’s, Kirks, or Hurley’s (found in the freezer section), then thaw and cut it before your trip. If you don’t pre-cut the squid, bring scissors instead of a knife to make it easier. Also, be sure to bring paper towels—it can get messy!
WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU FIRST GET IN THE WATER WITH THE STINGRAYS?
When you arrive at Stingray City, there are a few important steps to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Here’s a quick guide to help you enjoy Stingray City safely:
- Arrival & Briefing: When you arrive, the stingrays will approach, expecting food. If you’re on a tour, listen carefully to the safety briefing about interacting with the rays.
- Entering the Water: Use the ladder rather than jumping in, as the water is shallow (2-5 feet) and full of rays you could land on. Let others go first if you feel nervous.
- Interaction: Move slowly and gently as the stingrays approach, keeping your hands calm to avoid startling them.
- Feeding & Handling: If allowed, you can feed the rays—often a highlight! Touch them gently on their backs, as shown by your guide.
- Exploring & Photos: Take in the beauty, enjoy watching the rays up close, and capture photos of the stunning water and wildlife.
- Returning: Once finished, head back to the boat, ready to share stories and photos.
By following these steps, you have a safe encounter and create lasting memories of this unique adventure.
HOW DO YOU HANDLE A STINGRAY?

Handling the stingrays is an easy process. Here are some key guidelines to follow when you get in the water:
✅ Approach Calmly: Move slowly and kneel or crouch in the shallow water (about 3 feet deep) to be at the stingray’s level, without lifting it out of the water.
✅ Gentle Contact: Gently stroke the stingray’s back or sides, avoiding the sensitive underside.
✅ Feeding: If you’re feeding a ray, follow your guide’s instructions. Hold the food flat in your palm to let the stingray approach safely.
✅ Proper Holding Technique: Wait for your guide to transfer the ray to you. Extend both arms before you, gently balancing the stingray between them. Don’t worry, your tour guide is there to assist you and will demonstrate.
VISITING STINGRAY CITY: WHAT TO KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
Before you visit Stingray City, there are a few things you’ll want to know to make the most of your experience. In this section, I’ll cover the best times to go, what to bring, and whether it’s truly worth the trip.
Here’s what you need to know before you visit Stingray City:
WHAT IS THE BEST TIME OF DAY TO VISIT STINGRAY CITY?
If you want to avoid the busiest times, consider visiting Stingray City either early in the morning or later in the afternoon. Golden hour is my favorite. The golden sheen of the sun on the water is breathtaking and you’ll often have the sandbar to yourself. Though the stingrays tend to have left already to avoid predators, it’s still beautiful.
The early morning is also a great time, and the water tends to be calmer. The stingrays may also be scarce early in the morning due to predators like the elusive Hammerhead. But by 9:00 a.m., they’ll be ready to be fed.
WHAT IS THE BEST DAY OF THE WEEK TO VISIT STINGRAY CITY?
When planning your visit to Stingray City, timing can make a big difference in your experience. Here’s what you need to know about visiting as a stayover guest or a cruise ship passenger, including the best times to go and how to avoid crowds.
Stayover Guests:
Stingray City is the most popular attraction in Grand Cayman, especially with cruise ship passengers. To avoid the crowds, plan your visit on days when fewer ships are in port. Typically, Mondays and Wednesdays are the busiest cruise days, as multiple ships often dock at once. For a more peaceful experience, aim for a visit on a non-cruise day.
Cruise Ship Passengers:
If you’re arriving on a cruise, don’t worry—you’ll still have a fantastic experience at Stingray City. There are plenty of stingrays, and they’ll swim up to every new boat that anchors for feeding. Plus, boats constantly coming and going helps to ease congestion.
Truthfully, no matter when you go, you’ll have a great experience. There are more ideal days, but if those don’t work for you, still go!
WHAT TO WEAR AT STINGRAY CITY
To make the most of your visit to Stingray City, it’s important to wear the right clothing and bring the right gear. Here’s a list of essentials that will help ensure you’re comfortable, protected, and ready for a memorable experience in the water:
✅ Swimwear: A swimsuit that allows easy movement and provides good coverage is a must.
✅ Footwear: The sandbar has a sandy bottom, so shoes aren’t necessary. I think not wearing them helps maintain your balance. Enjoy the sand beneath your feet; you might also find a sand dollar.
✅ Sun Protection: Apply reef-safe, water-resistant sunscreen and bring a hat and sunglasses for sun protection while on the boat.

✅ Snorkeling Gear: Many tours provide this equipment, so check with your operator in advance.
✅ Waterproof Bag: A dry bag is essential to keep your belongings safe and dry, especially your phone or camera.
✅ Camera Gear: If you want to capture the moment, bring a waterproof camera or GoPro.
✅ Comfortable Clothing: A light cover-up or rash guard will add extra sun protection, and don’t forget a towel to dry off afterward.
By dressing appropriately and bringing the right gear, you’ll be well-prepared for an enjoyable and comfortable visit to Stingray City.
